Scorpions

Description

Scorpions are predatory arachnids of the scientific order Scorpiones. They have eight legs and are easily recognized by the pair of claws and the narrow tail which is often displayed in a forward curve over the back, ending with a stinger that is capable of delivering venom. Scorpions range in size from one third of an inch to 9 inches.

Scorpions have been around since the Silurian period about 430 million years ago.

All scorpions have a venomous sting, but the majority do not represent a serious threat to humans and in most cases healthy adults do not need any medical treatment after being stung. Only about 25 species are known to have venom capable of killing a human. In some parts of the world with highly venomous species human fatalities will occur but is in mostly areas with limited or no access to medical treatment.

Habitat
The scorpion is mainly found in the southern hemisphere in deserts and jungle habitats alike. The most northern place the scorpion can be found in the wild is the Isle of Sheppey in the United Kingdom, which is a small island in the North of Kent. They can now be found on all continents except Antarctica. There are approximately 1750 scorpion species.

Diet

Scorpions feed primarily on insects and other arthropods like spiders. They have been known to eat mice, frogs and lizards, too.

Life Cycle

Female scorpions give birth to live young in litters that can range from 4 to 9 babies. The baby scorpions climb onto the back of the mother scorpion almost immediately after birth. The mother scorpion will look after her baby scorpions until they are able to hunt for themselves.

How to Get Rid of Scorpions

In order to get rid of scorpions, keep the following in mind:

  • Scorpions are always on the hunt for water. Keep puddles in and outside the home dry and repair any leaking pipes. Wipe up any spills from pet water bowls as you find them. Keep bathtubs wiped up after evening uses.
  • If you have any issues with roaches, ants or other bugs in your home you will have to remedy that problem before scorpions begin to leave your house. Scorpions feed on insects so getting rid of any bugs is an important step in keeping scorpions out of your home. Make sure to keep the insect population down outdoors as well to discourage any scorpions from even getting close to your home.
  • Scorpions like to hide in dark places so remove any potential scorpion shelters you see. Trim back bushes and other vegetation growing near your home. Remove wood and rock piles and keep lawn clippings stored away from the house. Clean any clutter from the perimeter of the home. Indoors: Scorpions love to hide in shoes so pick upfootwear and store on a shelf. Remove any bundles of newspapers or other items that tend to collect into piles.
  • You will need to seal up any areas of your home that a scorpion can get through. Use caulk to fill gaps, cracks and holes. Seal around windows, doors and foundations. Make sure windows can be closed completely and repair any holes in screens. Make sure doors have properly functioning door sweeps that completely cover the gap between the door and the threshold.

We hope that the previous suggestions will help you get rid of and keep scorpions in check around your home or place of business.
